This image is from my oil painting of a field of sunflowers in Tuscany. On a train from Rome to Florence, a handsome Italian sat next to me and became my tour guide. He explained how Italy has vast acreage of these tall and graceful blooms that make Italy's delicious sunflower oil.
I don't remember how it came up, but he told me the Italian word for the noise a dog makes is "abbaiare". It was the most beautiful word I ever heard because Italian has a lilt all its own, and it was a bittersweet parting when I had to leave the train.
